Natural wine can be classified according to cultivation and brewing method.
The definition is often vague, so 3amours has its own classification system and rigorous selection process.
Biologique (biological) wine is made from grapes which were grown organically and requires that the winemakers do not use any chemical products. Biologique wines are independently certified, but 3amours does not focus on these certifications.
Biodynamique (biodynamic) wine comes from vineyards that use special composts and herbs for treatments. Often they also follow a planting and work calendar based on natural phenomena, like phases of the moon, although this is not strictly part of the biodynamic principles. These wines are sometimes certified by private organisations like Demeter and Biodyvin, but 3amours does not focus on these certifications.
The “la lute raisonnée” cultivation method uses only the bare minimum amount of pesticides to maximize environmental conservation. By using pesticides only when the vines are struck with disease, this method ensures a stable harvest for the winemaker and preserves the health of the vines. Strictly speaking, 3amours does not consider wines made by this method to be “natural wine.”
Sustainable wine focuses on environmental conservation-based cultivation for the sustainability of people and the environment. Examples include using goats and beneficial birds for weed and pest management, drip irrigation facilities, composting and recycling of waste products, and environmentally-friendly use of agricultural supplies. This philosophy maintains that humans are responsible for the sustainability of the entire ecosystem instead of just their vineyard. This method is based on la lutte raisonnée, so pesticides are only allowed on the vines when it is absolutely necessary. Sustainable wine is attracting worldwide attention as a global environmental preservation effort. However, strictly speaking, 3amours does consider wines made from this method to be “natural wine.”
This brewing method turns naturally cultivated grapes into full flavor, healthy wine. Natural brewing uses very little or no added sulfites.
We believe natural wine is made from grapes grown with no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, brewed with little or no additives, resulting in wine that reflects the essence of the grapes.
At 3amours, we seek out winemakers with great knowledge and skill that tirelessly pour passion and energy into making the best wines.
We continue to passionately seek out great wines according to our uncompromising selection criteria.
Our priority when searching for wine is the “natural level” of the vineyard and brewing. Natural does not mean wild. Wine is born from the culmination of “respect for mother nature” and the “wisdom and craft” of wine making. These wines best express the character of the grapes.
When winemakers say, “we focus on bringing out the flavors of the grapes with minimum intervention” one may think they just leave the grapes alone to ferment. This could not be further from the truth. Natural winemakers require a vast amount of wisdom and knowledge to harness the full potential of the grapes.
Tasting alone is not enough to understand the true significance of a wine. When we discover interesting new wines, we usually visit their winery first. At the winery we check every detail of the vineyard and production. We then determine if we agree with the winemaker’s ethos and philosophy. This is a crucial selection criteria.
Sometimes we develop partnerships as an investment in the future development of a winemaker. These partnerships pay off when these wines transform into something extraordinary..
There is a world class vineyard in the Languedoc region of France that is 70-90 years old. This region has very little rain so diseases are rare and the vineyard saves money by not using pesticides. Labor costs are low for tasks like pruning, an essential process in growing great grapes. Despite great tasting wine and natural production methods, these wines are an incredible value.
Higher costs don’t always make better wine, so we seek out great natural wine value.
We appreciate the labor and skill of natural winemakers through the wine they produce, and we believe that ordinary and exquisite wine are worlds apart.
The wines we carry at 3amours are special and personify each winemaker's individual art, philosophy, and story.
We hope you will explore these unique wines at our store, wine bar, and events.
Please join us on a journey to discover and enjoy exquisite natural wine!
